about
It didn't seem like too long ago when Corresponding Handpieces put out Batavia Complex, their sprawling, 19-track rock opus that ran through tons of styles, ranging from world-beat instrumentals to Reichian piano ballads to dark hip-hop to classic C.Hand guitar rock. Needless to say, it was ab it of an intimidating listen.
Yet one of the most unique tracks is "Soda Shop Rock", a bubblegum pop of a single wrapped in layers of shoegaze guitar fuzz and topped with the crystal clear, angelic vocals of Cami Woodruff. With lyrics penned by Dave and music written by the band, Woodruff's unique, elegant style give this track a sharp kick in the pants, an astute and perky wakeup call for a disc that so often gets dragged into dark thematic territory, ultimately making for one of C.Hand's greatest moments.
On the B-side front, this disc features two very special recordings that didn't quite make the cut for the final Batavia tracklist. "Dumb Girlfriend [Deluxe]" is a redone version of the classic PET ME track, which was inexplicably missing a full second verse when it came to mixing the album. This version attempts to fix that by completely revamping it. "When the Wolves Come After You", meanwhile, is a badass solo rock instrumental in search of a world-class vocalist. Are you up to the task?
ENJOY!
